GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems Luton (ATS) has the ability to design and manufacture complete ice protection systems including associated control and power management equipment. All design work is performed using the latest ice catch prediction methods. Proposed designs are thoroughly tested as full-scale test pieces in the dedicated Icing Research Wind Tunnel.

The laser projection system is used in the lay-up of multi-layered composite components. The systems used at GAS consist of two or more laser projectors mounted above the bond tool. Files from CAD are downloaded, the image is projected onto the complex 3D working surface of the tool, and the operator uses the projected image to locate the plies accurately.

This gives GKN ATS Luton a repeatable process and high quality parts, with the flexibility to reduce lead times.
